Movie Review-Contagion

Let me start off by saying that the plot in Contagion is one of my worst fears. I’ve mentioned before that it’s real-life, plausible stuff that scares me, and not a monster with slimy hands that has a wolf head. Diseases fascinate me, and for awhile I thought I wanted to be an epidemiologist when I grew up, but after watching this movie, I realize that I don’t know nearly enough big words to be able to do the job.

A quip I had with this movie can be linked to the “Holiday Movie Effect.” What I am referring to is Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve, the movies that contained every celebrity ever created. I haven’t seen the latter, but while Valentine’s Day was “cute,” there was just WAY TOO MUCH going on. I like movies that contain several story lines that somehow connect together, but in that case, no. Just no. Too much hyping up that lots of big names were in the movie and not enough good movieness. I slightly saw that in Contagion, what with having a handful of well-known, critically acclaimed actors and actresses like Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyenth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Marion Cotillard. I always love Winslet and Damon, and Law if I’m in the right mood, and I respect Cotillard as an actress, but Paltrow usually receives the intimidating eye squint/head nod from me. I really like that they executed this movie from several perspectives, and I normally like that, but something just seemed a little off about it. I was left wanting more from certain character’s sagas.

Overall, I hope I’m not jinxing myself for not giving this movie the best review if in fact we are hit with a plague in the near future. Shit.

It wasn’t all bad! Definitely rooted in an intriguing/terrifying idea, and got me thinking for sure. (2 karma points earned)
